Finally – I managed to get a project in South Africa! When I told my sister, who has been residing in South Africa for nearly 10 years, she was over the moon. My sister had just visited her friend at The Winston Hotel and managed to convince me that this hidden design hotel is the best value for money on offer in Johannesburg.
The Winston Hotel is a small and cosy boutique hotel that provides the chic backdrop for the stylish traveller, timeless elegance for a romantic couple and a homely atmosphere for the frequent business traveller. The Winston Hotel is not the place for those in a rush, who need room service at any hour and plan to have formal private meetings.
Think of this colonial home as a gracious and relaxing place to come to after a long day at work. A place where you can unwind in the warm and inviting courtyard, enjoy a Rooibos tea with a colleague in the beautifully designed library, or enjoy an evening cocktail at the opulent bar.
For the frequent business traveller there are a few things you should know. The breakfast at The Winston Hotel is a la carte. Unfortunately service is rather slow, so ensure you leave enough time to enjoy the delicious hot choices on offer. If you are working till late, arrange your dinner at the restaurant hotel in advance, as room service is not available after 10.30pm. If you plan on getting your fitness fix at the hotel, the hotel does not have a gym, though there is a gym in the mall nearby.
The Winston Hotel does not necessarily have all the amenities one would expect from a 5 star hotel. But I would happily trade off a gym and wait an extra ten minutes for my breakfast to stay in a spectacular couture hotel that has carefully handpicked an eclectic mix of artefacts, treasures and design elements that make this hotel so warm and inviting. When you are on the road so much, a “home away from home” is all you want.
